Dance Photography - Attempt 2

Finally got it right! This time the backdrop didn't give me as much trouble because I used double sided tape to hold it down in addition to some weights to make sure it didn't shift during our shoot.

Piper did a great job posing for me and it shows in the photos.  I definitely think this is something I can do in the future for entire dance companies.

Once we complete our move to Dallas this is something I intend to pursue. Until then here are the images I came away with today.

Dance Photography-Attempt 1

So I got the backdrop all ironed out, as good as it would iron anyway, and set it up in the living room.  It was still pretty wrinkly so I'm going to have to reshoot these photos. Every time Piper got posed the whole thing shifted so next time I'll have to weight it down and use double sided tape to make sure it stays put.

I did end up with one I really liked though. A close-up so the wrinkles aren't so obvious.

Shooting Dance Photography

So after seeing the sky high prices of the photographer hired by my daughter's dance studio, I decided to try this out myself.  I got the backdrop in the mail yesterday so tonight I'm getting it ready and all my equipment so I can try to recreate this myself at home.

I'll post the images tomorrow sometime when I've downloaded everything.

Dance Photography

Recently my daughter's dance studio had photos taken and while waiting for her to finish I was browsing their order form and just about lost it.

I've never done dance photography or even thought about it, but I've been in the wrong business! You don't get the option of buying the hi-res digital image and all the print options are expensive.  I think the cheapest option I saw was $40 for a single photo. Of course the prices per item drop almost in half when you make a minimum order but when you factor in copies for grandparents you're well north of $100 with only a few shots.

In an effort to save money I'm going to re-shoot my daughter's dance photos and use a white backdrop I just ordered online for only $30.  As soon as I have them finished I'll upload what I've done and see how they compare to the photographer the dance studio hired.

I miss photography!

It's been a fun few years being a Mommy but it's time to start shooting again. I miss being behind the camera. I miss being creative in Photoshop. And I miss travel photography the most.

This was from a shoot in February 2007 in San Francisco during Chinese New Year. I have the typical shots of the Golden Gate Bridge, of course, but when I turned the corner on that rainy day to see this sea of umbrellas, I gasped. It was the coolest thing I'd seen in the city. Nothing but color as far as the eye could see and it was spectacular!
